What is the economic effect of pirating ?

The common sense is that it is always negatively impactful for artists. It could make it easier to listen to new artists and get more free publicity. Then that can be used 

It is morally wrong that there is an oligopoly in the entertainment industry for movies, shows, books, and music. 

Movies and TV shows entertainment is dominated by Netflix, Disney and Amazon Prime. 

Music is dominated by Spotify and Apple Music

Book is dominated by Goodreads 

Audio Books is dominated by Audible (Amazon)

So you have these network effects, which basically means since everyone uses these platforms it is also the location to get the largest reach if you publish something new. 

 

The research is already clear: markets corrupt intrinsic motivation. Studies consistently show that when you tie payment to creative work, people become risk-averse, less original, and more focused on external validation than the work itself. Once someone is paid for art, they optimize for what sells rather than what compels them. The market becomes a filter that selects for commerciality, not authenticity.

Remove payment pressure, and something shifts psychologically. You're creating because the act itself matters—the puzzle of expression, the satisfaction of solving a creative problem, the joy of making something that didn't exist before. This is what drives hobbyists, children, and artists who create despite market indifference. The motivation becomes purer because it's not mediated by someone else's purchasing decision.

But here's the trap: you still need recognition to feel validated. Humans aren't solipsistic. We create partly for ourselves, partly for an imagined audience, and partly because we want to matter. So the question becomes: what replaces markets as the feedback mechanism?
